SYNOPSIS

SUNSET HIGH is an original stage play about four high school students and their teachers and principal dealing with serious issues and concerns. SUNSET HIGH is a play with a message of hope, perseverance, and a willingness to succeed against all odds. The good and bad days at SUNSET HIGH is a must-see stage play for middle and high school students everywhere.

SUNSET HIGH addresses issues such as bullying and cyberbullying, snitching, stealing, gangs, drugs, teen sex, cheating, racism, respect for authority, self, and others, self-esteem, S.T.D.’s, concerned school staff, ACT, SAT, and exit exams, study habits,  internet predators, weapons on campus, and conflict resolution.

MR. WILKES, the principal, has served the district for 42 years. He finds himself faced with situations that the school has never before had to deal with. A few of those situations are students who are totally out of control and staff members whose actions are undesirable and unethical.

MS. RANDALL, a dedicated teacher, finds herself at odds with certain students. Her willingness to do right by all students leads to a conflict in her classroom. The situation gets out of hand and needs to be addressed by higher authority. She has no idea about what’s about to happen as a result of that classroom incident

BLOOD is the bully and thug on campus. He is now at the crossroads of his life, dealing with the choice of being the popular thug. His choices, decisions, and consequences will affect not only his life but the lives of everyone at Sunset High School. MAMA is the concerned mother of Blood who her son totally disrespects

TINA is a student with a vision who struggles to keep her faith and morals. She is a strong-minded and excellent student who finds herself caught up in the gossip and mess at Sunset High School.

WILLIE JOE is unique in his own way. He is a “Mr. Know It All” who is not living up to his academic potential. Being nosy and a gossiper, he finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He now must deal with an incident that he will remember forever.

DES, a streetwise student with an unstable home life, deals with the challenges of life’s journey. She realizes she is the focus of pain, shame, sin, and the unforgiving situations that make life unpleasant.

SUNSET HIGH could be any school in any town. SUNSET HIGH could very well be your school. The situations and illustrations in this 85-minute drama are eye-opening. This production is appropriate for middle and high school students, GEAR UP Programs, Title One Programs, Upward Bound, Trio Programs, Job Corps Centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, and church youth groups. SUNSET HIGH is a must-see stage play for those who want to know what issues today's young people face.

Our chapter collaborated with Public Awareness Theater in hosting the original stage play Love Doesn’t Have To Hurt. The play served as an opportunity to raise awareness regarding domestic violence, as well as a fundraiser for our organization.  We were entertained by a stellar production company, with passionate acting, and a compelling story.

Public Awareness Theater has been performing on the campus of Coahoma Community College since 1993. Love Doesn’t Have To Hurt  was powerful, and some students confessed that the play mirrored their current  or past situations.

The play, Sunset High, is an effective portrayal of challenges that many youths face today. I, along with students appreciated the tragicomic style of the play in that it conveyed a serious message that was mixed with a strand of comedy.
